Now that my internet access is spotty at best I want to let everyone know what I have been doing and what I have currently planned. This will take form as the progress tracker, even though this is a bit of a misnomer - if you want to track the actual progress I have made you can also look at the update list. The progress tracker will simply be a forum tool for me to inform everyone of what is going on during my extended absences from the MUD.

Status update: Code for attachments and equipment upgrade is now live and relatively bugfixed through playtesting. Our network has become much more stable over the last week, allowing me to get actual work done. The next big code push will be an array of bugfixes for various facets of the game code. After that will be the content push for new zones, zone content, and NPC overhaul.

Status update: our network has been almost completely unreliable for the last month, making it next to impossible for me to get any work done on the MUD or the website. I have gotten large chunks of the upgrade system debugged, just a few more left. Everything is dependent on how our network holds out now.

I have completed an enormous amount of code in support of the new upgrade system. All of the code requires testing but is for the most part completed. I also have some administrative beachwork to do as far as object creation for the upgrade system. Currently in addition to adding attachment upgrades to weapons players will also be able to: add attachment upgrades to armor, break down unwanted weapons and armor into mechanical parts, spend mechanical parts to add extra attachment slots to weapons and armor (MAX of 4 per item), spend mechanical parts to upgrade an attachment, break down food/drink consumables into food/water resources, break down construction consumables into construction parts to future integration and use with construction systems.
I have also begun addressing the large volume of bugs surrounding stat recalculation and am about 75% of the way through. This may or may not come in before upgrades. The basic issue behind this was that stat recalculation was just that...stats were zeroized across the board and recalculated. This simply doesn't work anymore with the larger number of ways to adjust stats (training, classes, survival kits, etc.), so the one-size-fits-all recalculation method is being replaced in every instance in which stats can be modified with a case-by-case methodology. When bug-testing is over and the code is ready for play-testing I will make a post detailing every instance in which stats can be modified so that players can be aware of deviations from these instances.
There are also hosts of smaller bug-fixes that will be detailed when they are introduced.

So here's the deal: we no longer have satellite internet service because the local Afghani company was ripping us off. We are in the process of collecting monies for and ordering a new satellite service, but it could be another 2-4 weeks before it is here and operational. If there are any major bugs or game-breaking issues post them in the bug report section and I will do my best to try to resolve them. Sorry about this, folks...welcome to Afghanistan. |

So after what has been an almost 3-month ordeal, we have re-established internet service on our fire base here in scenic Afghanistan. I apologize for the delay but hiccups due to volcanoes exploding and equipment being lost in transit took their toll. As soon as I get stuff re-situated here I will begin working on the MUD again. Hope to see both familiar and new faces around for the next 5 months or so.

| Here's the deal: our satellite internet link has too much latency for me to even log into the MUD much less get actual work done. Disappointing, but progress must be made. I am working on new code additions that will convert the MUD from its hack'n'slash roots to a more survival-sim oriented game. This code will be introduced when I return from Afghanistan, probably circa the beginning of 2011. Sorry for the hold-up, but that's just the way this cookie crumbled. |
